The Quest for a Natural Deodorant

Natural Deodorant

A Community Round Up!!

Well wow! Never have I ever received more DMs than when I shared yesterday on IG that I was in a multi-year long struggle to find a natural deodorant that didn’t either leave me v stinky or with a crazy angry rash.

(I REALLY don’t want aluminum and gross chemicals, but stinky and/or miserably itchy aren’t options either, ya know?!)

Turns out a ton of people I personally know are in the same boat!

General LOL DMs:

“Omg SAME!! I’ve tried so many and some will work for a little and then BAM… horrible rash!”

“I also had to switch back to Dove because I was getting smelly with everything I’ve tried.

Below is:

  • What I’m currently testing

  • The trick I’ve read helps expedite the (sometimes smelly) transition from old school aluminum deodorants to something natural

  • ALL the recommendations friends & IG followers wrote to me about + their good and bad experiences with each!

Yay for hive think…

As you’ll see below, there are good and bad experiences with each that contradict each other. So I think it’s all about what your body likes! Hopefully this compilation of real experiences from people I really know will be helpful for you to find something that works for you!

(If you have an experience with one of these or another, please DM me on IG or comment below so we can continue with the hive think!)

What I’m currently testing:

Native!

I picked the Coconut Vanilla scent and it smells so good haha, I feel tempted to chomp into it the same way I wished I could eat Smackers when I was little (don’t worry, I won’t).

One of my fav IG gals I follow posted about how much she loved it. So when I saw it was such a normal price ($10) I swiped it!

I’ve tried two in the past. One left me with the most insane rash after a few weeks that my doctor thought it was an infection and prescribed antibiotics LOL! The other was expensive, was only available on the company’s site (heavy shipping fee and long wait, bummer!), and left me smelly AF!

I’ll update you how my journey with Native goes. So far… the positives = no irritation, really smooth/easy to apply, and passed the smell test after hiking in 95 degrees lol.

TBH I was scared I’m going to get a rash from this one too and waste more money on this quest.

BUT – Good news, Native actually DM-ed me and said to email them if I do get irritated as they’d be happy to exchange the deodorant with a different one of their sensitive line (apparently doesn’t have baking soda!)

Their email is on the back of each deodorant so that is convenient and kind!

A sneaky transition trick:

A lot of people don’t give natural deodorant a fighting chance because there is often a little transition period where your body is purging the bad juju you put on it for so many years. I read a lot yesterday about how you can help your lil pits out with something many already have!

Drum roll please… applying a charcoal face mask!

This is the one from Beauty Counter I’ve used for the past 3 years and love. It’s safe and the tube lasts a long time.

I’ll be doing this this week and will report back, but everything I read claims this little trick is a lifesaver!

Real people recommendations + experiences:

This turned into an accidental little natural deodorant encyclopedia!

So so many thoughtful and detailed DMs wow haha! THANK YOU if you were one of the folks who took the time to write me. I have copied and pasted them all below verbatim instead of screenshots to streamline and also not put anyone on blast who doesn’t like their business (or arm pit rash tales) on the internet haha. Know that these are all from real people who I really know!

I’m only including the products that the person who DM-ed actually has tried. Hope it helps!

1.) Native:

Pros:

“I have been using native deodorant for close to a year now and love it. I was looking for something that took care of BO. It works wonders. I didn’t have too bad of a transition from my dove deodorant to native. But I hear it can take two weeks to a month for your armpits to fully transition to aluminum free deodorant. I really like the coconut and vanilla as well as the lilac and white tea”

“Love it! You’ll still get a little smelly if you do super intense workouts, but it’s a keeper for sure!”

“Really good stuff!”

“This was the winner for me! I love the white peach & apricot scent.”

“THIS!!! And there’s a 3-pack on Amazon with these amazing scents (even a peony one!)

“I use this! Sometimes I spray magnesium oil with it too!”

“My fave!! But it doesn’t work on super sweaty days. Better for fall/winter!!

“I’m beyond obsessed! It’s the best and my roomie loves it too!”

“Yes!! I use native (after an equally long hunt) and it’s great! I got rashes too and I didn’t get it with native! FYI though, it has coconut oil in it so it sometimes leaves a weird residue on your clothes. Womp womp.”

2.) Schmidts:

Pros:

“This is only natural deodorant I’ve ever found that works. I love it (Rose + Vanilla scent!) I noticed some coloration on a white shirt, but it washed out for me.”

Cons:

“I was using this, but it turned all the armpits on my clothes a weird color. All my whites were stained!”

“I did NOT like Schmidt’s. Serious rash. Crying at dermo. Etc etc.”

3.) Lume:

Pros:

“The only one that has ever worked for me!”

“This is the stuff!”

“Love this one… but get the unscented because the scented ones are sooooooo bad!”

4.) Kopari:

Pros:

“My absolute fav!”

“I love Kopari!!! I got rashes from other natural brands (Schmidt’s especially!). Not with Kopari! It’s basically coconut oil!”

5.) Primal Pit:

Con:

“Worked for a little and then gave me an awful rash. Also is like a really hard chapstick so it’s not easy to apply”

6.) Primaly Pure:

Pros:

“The charcoal deodorant!”

“Love it and mostly works.”

Cons:

“Stopped working on my BO after like 2 weeks, but no rashes like with other natural brands!”

7.) Weleda Wild Rose:

Pros:

Stays strong through workouts, but takes 1-2 weeks to adjust to it ;-)

8.) Piper Wei:

“LOVE!”

9.) Megababe-Rosy Pits:

Pros:

“Scent ROCKS. Lasts 1 year per stick!”

“So good!”

Cons:

“Good not great”

10.) Each and Every:

Pros:

“Seen so many people with sensitive skin love this so I just ordered. I’ve tried everything and get rashes from everything so far, so hoping this is the trick!”

11.) Love Beauty Planet:

Pros:

“This is what I use! I mostly don’t smell bad but it can leave residue!”

“Works for meee!”

12.) Ursa Major:

“Works for me!”

13.) Myro:

“I like this a lot so far!”

“Very smooth texture. And they have a reusable case thing, so they just send you refills, so less plastic consumption!”

14.) Everyman Jack:

“Also good!”

15.) Crystals:

“No aluminum but is also an perspiring if that’s what you’re looking for!”
